ENGLISH ELECTRIC (PART ONE) (digipack)
ENGLISH ELECTRIC RECORDINGS ECD8031 - UK, 2012 |
|
This is the second album by this particular Big Big Train lineup after The Underfall Yard, but the improvement over that one is astonishing. Trimming back the stable of guest musicians substantially and offering a spruced-up sound which combines progressive rock song structures and compositional techniques to a somewhat broader aesthetic than most prog, the album manages to be simultaneously quite accessible and at the same time a real prog revelation. Founder member Greg Spawton's guitar work on this is a real highlight, particularly in the way he brings in influences which most prog guitarists tend to overlook. For instance, his performance on Uncle Jack begins in a folky style with just a whiff of bluegrass to it, but as the song progresses and complexities pile up it ends up gradually mutating into something much more unusual. David Longdon's one of those prog vocalists who likes to mimic Peter Gabriel, but he's stunningly good at it and his performance sounds absolutely natural and not forced at all. The traces of Spock's Beard I could hear on The Underfall Yard are well and truly gone - as, indeed, is any obvious imitation of past prog bands. This album is, in short, a true prog original, as well as one of my biggest surprises of the year - having been none too impressed by the band's back catalogue, I really hadn't planned on giving them another go, but the high praise given to this one made me feel compelled to relent on that and I'm profoundly glad I did. Big Big Train fans will be thrilled by their heroes' latest triumph; prog fans who have previously given them short shift might be advised to give this one a taste because it might just win them over. GATHERING SPEED (digipack)
ENGLISH ELECTRIC RECORDINGS ECD7848 - UK, 2004 |
|
What would you think of a mix of Genesis and Yes adding some elements of late progressive rock? This what I find listening this good example of 70s progressive rock music... recorded in 2004. Let's try to clarify this: singer voice is like Jon Anderson's in a lower pitch, but cadence and tempo of his singing is of Yes vocalist, so they are vocals arrangements (higher tone voice in chorus seems to be Jon Anderson himself), this is more noticeable in some phrases that ends in a sustained echo. Guitar playing ranges from picked playing a-la Howe to some intense riffs a-la Hackett, I noticed some of the very simple of one note which were characteristics of Hackett. Acoustic guitar arrangements are pure Genesis era-Gabriel, listen to Powder Monkey. Some passages of Gathering Speed are of Yes in Tales of Topographic Ocean. Pay attention to some string ensemble parts which are exactly like some Yes creation. This guys includes also Genesis flute in some themes and harmonica (yes. the little mouth instrument), which is something somehow creative. Bass playing is Mike Rutherford's. And this is very interesting: there is not so much bass player who have reproduced so good the riffing bass playing of him. Good work by Mr. Andy Poole. Drum playing should be a-la Alan White, anyway it's a good drummer Mr. Hughes. Anyway, this is not a disgusting album, the only problem is that being surprised all the time with the elements taken from that great progressive bands, listener sometimes loose the creation by BBT. THE DIFFERENCE MACHINE (digipack)
ENGLISH ELECTRIC RECORDINGS ECD8028 - UK, 2007 |
|
On The Difference Machine the band has invited famous progrock guest musicians: Nick D'Virgilio (drums/vocals) and Dave Meros from Spock's Beard and Pete Trewavas (bass) from Marillion/Transatlantic. The album contains six compositions, three have a running time between 12 and 15 minutes and I can tell you, never a dull moment: from dreamy with violin-Mellotron and compelling with fiery guitar/choir-Mellotron/saxophone to a final part with propulsive guitar and organ in Perfect Cosmic Storm, an inspired contribution by Nick and Pete and great work on keyboards and guitar in the alternating Pick Up If You're There and wonderful choir-Mellotron in the moving Salt Water falling On Uneven Ground. The final track Summer's Lease emphasizes Big Big Train their compositional skills, especially creating pleasant atmospheres and a tasteful instrumentation: first a dreamy climate with twanging guitar, mellow organ and saxophone, then more compelling and lush with Mellotron and saxophone and in the end fragile work on the piano, beautiful! THE UNDERFALL YARD (digipack)
ENGLISH ELECTRIC RECORDINGS ECD8029 - UK, 2009 |
|
One of the most critically-acclaimed progressive rock releases of 2009, Big Big Train's sixth album 'The Underfall Yard' finds this British three-piece working with a heavyweight cast that includes the likes of Spock's Beard drummer-and-vocalist Nick D'Virgilio, It Bites' Francis Dunnery and Frost creator Jem Godfrey. Obvious a lovingly-crafted album, 'The Underfall Yard' features a slow, careful, symphonic sound enriched by a collection of unusual instruments such as Trombones, Cellos, French Horns and Cornets that juxtapose warmly with Big Big Train's guitar-and-keyboard heavy approach. Obvious influences such as Genesis and King Crimson abound, though the prosaic, almost maudlin tone of many of the compositions on offer also hint towards a slightly more classical sound. Vocalist David Longdon has a deep, bassy, baritone voice that compliments the battery of instruments nicely, but despite the commendably complex instrumentation on show, 'The Underfall Yard' somehow never really takes off and truly excites. What the band have created is a kind of earnest balladry peppered with proggy ingredients that's all very interesting and but pretty hard tack for those in search of genuinely innovative and genuinely entertaining prog rock. There's no denying the group's expert craftmanship, but unfortunately, despite their richly-textured sound, Big Big Train have still yet to reach the heights reached by the genuine greats of modern prog such as Diagonal, Astra and Beardfish, three bands that have created contemporary prog that is both original and exciting. A worthy effort from Big Big Train, but, unfortunately, despite it's musical excellence, a fundamentally flawed one. (S.Turner - Progarchives)

FAR SKIES DEEP TIME (digipack)
ENGLISH ELECTRIC RECORDINGS ECD8030 - UK, 2010 |
|
UK band BIG-BIG TRAIN has six full-length albums to their name since they started out, the latest of them "The Underfall Yard" from 2009. 2010 saw the band celebrating their 20th anniversary, and while no new full-length album appeared, the band decided to release the next best thing, the album-length EP "Far Skies Deep Time", to celebrate the occasion. "Far Skies Deep Time" is a delightful creation that should cater quite nicely for those with an interest in symphonic art rock. The emphasis on strong melodies and distinct moods is of a kind that should appeal to fans of the vintage variety as well as those with a soft spot for Neo-prog, and when sold as a low-price EP this should prove to be excellent value for money for all concerned. GOODBYE TO THE AGE OF STEAM (digipack)
ENGLISH ELECTRIC RECORDINGS ECD0172 - UK, 1994 |
|
Rich in the English neo-prog vein of JADIS and GALAHAD, BIG BIG TRAIN deliver highly symphonic and memorable music. "Goodbye To The Age Of Steam" is a wonderful little recording with some solid guitar, keyboard and drum interplay. In many ways this album reminds very much of JADIS and in fact Steve Christey and Gary Chandler both join the lads adding some brilliance. In fact this album is hosted by a few other friends including Stu Nicholson (GALAHAD), Martin Orford (IQ) and Sally French. BIG BIG TRAIN play a very tight and bright rock with gentle passages and packed with solid instrumentation. Solid neo-prog all the way through. (progarchives.com)... Ref. A.Phillips, It Bites. Eventyr Records rating: 1ne star.

LADY LAKE
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD3599 - UK, 1972 |
|
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a newly remastered edition of the legendary album by GNIDROLOG, Lady Lake. The band was originally formed in 1969 and signed to RCA Records in 1971. Following on the heels of the album IN SPITE OF HARRY’S TOENAIL (also released by ESOTERIC), LADY LAKE featured a line up of COLIN GOLDRING (lead vocals, guitars, recorder, tenor sax, horn, harmonica), STEWART GOLDRING (lead guitar, vocals), PETER MARS COWLING (bass, cello) and NIGEL PEGRUM (percussion, flute, oboe). The album saw GNIDROLOG continue to develop their unique form of Progressive Rock, which had critics compare the band to cohorts such as GENTLE GIANT and VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR. Although failing to sell in huge quantities, GNIDROLOG’s status has grown over the years with their original vinyl albums reaching huge sums among collectors. This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been newly remastered from the original master tapes and features a previously unreleased bonus track, a booklet that fully restores all original album artwork with a new essay.ssay.

PARACHUTE REBORN
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS/ANTENNA ECD8005 - UK, 2012 |
|
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the latest release on the new front-line label, ESOTERIC ANTENNA, dedicated to new releases by both new acts and established artists, the marvellous PARACHUTE REBORN by former PRETTY THINGS members, the XPTs, featuring WALLY WALLER, JON POVEY, PETE TOLSON and SKIP ALAN. In June 1970, the Pretty Things released their seminal album Parachute, a record with a collection of songs (written by Phil May and Wally Waller) that tackled the subject of the gradual realization that the dreams of the counter-culture movement of the late 1960s were beginning to unravel. Upon its release the album was hailed by the US magazine Rolling Stone as album of the year – a remarkable feat when one considers the competing releases by such heavy weights as Led Zeppelin, The Who et al. Fast forward four decades and Pretty Things members Wally Waller, Jon Povey, Pete Tolson and Skip Alan found themselves in a studio in Spain, undertaking the challenge of revisiting the material written and recorded on Parachute, extending and reworking the material to produce the album Parachute Reborn. The result is a remarkable work, which celebrates the original material, whilst successfully bringing a new edge to such classics as The Good Mr. Square (She Was Tall, She Was High), Cries from the Midnight Circus, Grass and The RainTrilogy. The harmonies of Waller and Povey are as sharp as ever, Pete Tolson’s guitar playing is as edgy as ever and Skip Alan remains the rhythmic powerhouse of the group. The addition of two new compositions, Here We Go Again and Think of Me Sometimes truly heralds a new era for Parachute, a musical experience that is truly reborn.

ALT
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS/ANTENNA ECD8004 - UK, 2012 |
|
ALT is no ordinary Van Der Graaf Generator album (if the term ordinary could ever be applied to this visionary group). PETER HAMMILL explains; Instrumental Improvs & Experiments - Most of the music on ALT was made while we weren't really looking, or perhaps only while the left side of our collective brain was engaged. The album is a mixture of improvisations recorded at sound checks and in the studio and more considered sonic creations which often verge on Musique Concrete. The fourteen pieces here offer a fascinating glimpse into an alternative Van der Graaf Generator sound world. Perhaps the closest comparison would be with the second CD of Present, but even the link with those recordings is tenuous. Even by Van der Graaf Generator standards, this stuff's at the wacky end of the scale! This instrumental album is another side of Van Der Graaf Generator, a truly unique listening experience.

CHILDREN OF THE SUN (2CD)
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD7975 - UK, 1968 |
|
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly remastered expanded edition of the sole album by THE SALLYANGIE, the duo featuring MIKE and SALLY OLDFIELD. Released by Nat Joseph’s Transatlantic label in 1969, the album was the first vinyl outing for both musicians. Although embryonic folk influenced music, the album has an innocent charm which has endeared it to many collectors of late 1960s folk–rock and of the solo work of both MIKE OLDFIELD and SALLY OLDFIELD. This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been remastered from the original master tapes and is expanded over two CDs to include EIGHT BONUS TRACKS, featuring the guitar improvisations Mrs. Moon and the Thatched Soup, Branches and A Sad Song for Rosie, along with both sides of the 1969 single Colour of the World b/w Two Ships and the rare tracks (previously unreleased on CD) Child of Allah and Lady Go Lightly, recorded in 1969 and released as a single by Philips Records in 1973.

OUT OF THE MIST
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD7742 - UK, 1977 |
|
It is always very exciting to anticipate the output of a very talented progressive band having suave female lead vocals and being absent from the scene during 7 years. Renaissance version 1 here are faithful to their Baroque romantic style. Jane Relf's lead vocals are still irreproachable, unique and really addictive. The album starts with a killer song "Isadora", a very catchy romantic song full of typical Baroque rhythmic piano. Actually, the omnipresent piano constantly flirts with Baroque, catchy & sophisticated airs, like during their early career. I cannot stop to like to be transported by Jane's pleasant & reassuring vocals on "Beautiful Country". The very bottom bass on "Solo Flight" remind you that it is Renaissance that is playing, despite the Yes-Drama like lead vocals. On side 2, "Everywhere You Go" sounds more acoustic due to the miscellaneous high frequency percussions; it contains some good background orchestral arrangements reminding a bit Renaissance with Annie Haslam. "Face Of Yesterday" is a reprise from their Illusion album made in 1970: it has a richer sound and it is globally more fluid: needless to say I prefer it to the original version. The a bit unexpected last track, "Candles Are Burning", contains a good progressive part full of rhythmic piano and electric guitar solos: unlike the other tracks, it is not really romantic, except for its beautiful & majestic finale: what a great manner to end an album! ILLUSION
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD7743 - UK, 1978 |
|
Compared to the preceding Out Of The Mist album, the record here has some more accessible songs, better suited for easy listening. The omnipresent piano is more simple, not really Baroque, and there is the presence of acoustic guitar. The music is not really progressive except for one or two tracks; the songs are not complex, but it is not a simple music though. There are still many pleasant lead & backing vocals. There are some good mellotron parts, but there are also a few artificial keyboards parts that do not fit very well with the musical genre of the band, like on the slightly psychedelic "Cruising Nowhere". Jane Relf's super soothing lead vocals will definitely transport you on "Man Of Miracles": it sounds like a pleasant & desired lullaby. The last track "The Revolutionary" is the most progressive one: it sounds a bit like The Strawbs. (greenback - Rate Your Music)

HEAVEN & HELL
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD7959 - UK, 1969 |
|
Heaven & Hell, the sole album by Harsh Reality, is a legend within the world of record collecting. Mint copies have sold for £400+!! Heaven & Hell was issued on Philips in 1969, on the back of an earlier single, Tobacco Ash Sunday. This Traffic-influenced song was written by Terry Stamp (later in Third World War and also a solo artist) and was recently covered by Paul Weller. Heaven & Hell has never officially been reissued on CD. Now Esoteric are proud to announce that the album has finally been re-mastered from the original tapes, and expanded with four mono mixes issued across two singles. For the first time, the sleeve-notes tell the story of this obscure proto-progressive rock band from Stevenage, Hertfordshire who emerged out of the remnants of the Freightliner Blues Band.

ILLUSION
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD7744 - UK, 1975 |
|
ISOTOPE were another major name of the UK jazz-rock scene, led by guitarist Gary Boyle. Some say they were formed in 1972,others in 1973...one thing is for sure,ISOTOPE debuted with their eponymous first album in 1974,an album full of endless jamming and energy, but with a sound closer to jazz and rock than prog.Important changes to the band's line-up were rapid as original members Jeff Clyne and Brian Miller (who was also a main composer of the band)left to be replaced by Lawrence Scott on keys and superb bassist Hugh Cooper (ex-Soft Machine). This drastic changes had the same drastic impact on the band's sound,as it can be heard on the sophomore release ''Illusion'' from the same year. The frenetic jams gave their place to a very elabarated,well-arranged and executed jazz/fusion progressive rock, characterized by the fantastic guitar work of Boyle, greatly inspired by JOHN MCLAUGHLIN and featuring some magnificent solos, changing climates and even some ethnic orientations.Hugh Cooper is there to fill the sound with his awesome bass lines, which contain a very psychedelic feeling and Lawrence Scoote proofs to be a very distinctive yet talented keyboardist with a number of excellent electric piano parts, not unlike what is heard by Chick Corea on RETURN TO FOREVER's albums. All compostions sound intense, rich, complicated and even melodic to my ears, covering a wide range of tempos and atmospheres...Another nice jazz-oriented release of the 70's,which undoubtfully deserves some of your time. DEEP END
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD7746 - UK, 1976 |
|
Third album in and finally Isotope look to be putting some sort of shape and form to their music, but by no means does this actually mean they are pulling together and creating sublime magic! Far from it. But I will say this. The tunes on the album have structure, so rather than just jam out an albums worth of worthless music it looks as if Gary Boyle and company actually plundered some formation together for some of the pieces, but again, the production values are rather dubious to say the least. Like the previous Isotope efforts there is a lacking of a convicting group dynamic due to the muted and extremely dull production, and if Deep End had gotten a tight cohesive production this truly could have been a fine piece of jazz rock fusion. But still, despite the cheap production, from the off Deep End is a better release than previous Isotope efforts. "Mr. M's Picture" is a good tune with a quirky title while and rocking "Crunch Cake" sounds as if guitarist Gary Boyle was listening and borrowing ideas from Miles Davis Jack Johnson album, and where I thought John McLaughlin was lacking inspiration on that album, Boyle actually sounds impressive here! But comparing both these guys is not my aim here and never would be. Though I would suggest that Boyle took inspiration from McLaughlin and at least some of his work on that album, but hey, prove me wrong! Former Soft Machine bassist Hugh Hooper had departed by the time this album was released to be replaced by the less inventive Dan K. Brown, but he, Hopper, left his mark behind big time in the shape of the silky cool and raw "Fonebone" one of Deep End's highlights. The rest of this album is typical jazz rock fusion with some great electric piano work from either Zoe Kronberger or Frank Roberts who deserve special mention, though there is good musicianship all round in general from the rest, but the ideas needed to be stretched out here and there. A little like this review. (jonnydeluxe - Rate Your Music)

ISOTOPE
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD7745 - UK, 1974 |
|
From the go, Isotope is a headless union of very able musicians. The tunes come across as underdeveloped and loose, often dull, jams. Gary Boyle is a gifted guitarist, but besides the sporadic moment lighting up the album, he fails to stamp his authority on the music as if leaving the task to someone else, someone else who is hardly bothered by all accounts. Perhaps in the live situation this jazz rock wannabe act may have come across as electric and powerful but the album sounds poor and pretty much lifeless, a weak and very flat production hardly helps this albums cause. While at the same time the first two Tony Williams Lifetime albums had very raw productions yet there was an intensity which was blistering, those traits are missing here, and there is a feeling of conservatism in the pieces on Isotope, tight but methodical, interesting but never that exciting. Jeff Clanye's bass plods along ploddingly and only adds to the woes while Nigel Morris being a solid drummer is no Billy Cobham, and that's being very fair. Synth and keyboard player Brian Miller wrote everything here but "Honkey Donkey", and his "Upward Curve" could be the one highlight of the album, along with "Windmills And Waterfalls", which is an excellent acoustic track where Boyle does excel, while Boyle's own composition "Honkey Donkey" is a near runner up. I certainly expected more from the album, and after reading the notes I was even more expectant, but overall it is a good album. A group of session men trying their hand at jazz rock but not quite getting to grips with what it actually needs to be fused and dynamic. Nice try though. (jonnydeluxe - Rate Your Music)

SHIBUYA NIGHTS LIVE IN TOKYO (digipack)
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD7948 - GERMANY, 2011 |
|
Esoteric Recordings announce the release of the new album by German legends AGITATION FREE. Of all of the experimental groups who emerged in Germany the early 1970s, Agitation Free was certainly one of the most musically adventurous. From their beginnings in Berlin in 1967, the band embraced the concept of performing long and free improvisations, experimenting with the use of liquid projectors, slide shows and their own films in live performances. The Beat Studio that AGITATION FREE initiated under the direction of Thomas Kessler also developed into the creative centre for the Berlin groups ASH RA TEMPEL and TANGERINE DREAM. The sound of Agitation Free featured the pioneering electronics of Michael Hoenig, one of Germany s best musicians when creating atmospheric melodies and powerful-layered soundscapes which both enhanced and defined the band s style. Also featured were guitarists Lutz Ulbrich and Gustl Lutjens whose magic fingers could conjure up exotic Eastern scales or soaring melodic melodies with ease. Drummer Burghard Rausch andbassist Michael Fame G?nther were a polyrhythmic rhythm section extraordinaire that propelled the music.

ALT
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS/ANTENNA ELP0538 - UK, 2012 |
|
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the latest release on their front-line label, ESOTERIC ANTENNA, dedicated to new releases by both new acts and established artists. ‘ALT’ is a new project by the legendary VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR and follows on from the release of A GROUNDING IN NUMBERS in 2011. The nine pieces here offer a fascinating glimpse into an alternative Van der Graaf Generator sound world. Perhaps the closest comparison would be with the second CD of Present, but even the link with those recordings is tenuous. Even by Van der Graaf Generator standards, this stuff's at the whacky end of the scale!
This instrumental album is another side of Van Der Graaf Generator, a truly unique listening experience.

A LIFE WITHIN A DAY
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS/ANTENNA ELP0537 - UK, 2012 |
|
With progressive rock (in its many forms) now seemingly more popular than ever, this collaboration from members of two of the godfathers of the genre is hugely exciting. Chris Squire has appeared on every YES album since 1969 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential bass guitarists of all time. Now an established solo artist, Steve Hackett first came to prominence as the guitarist with GENESIS. He was with the band from 1970 to 1977 and played on six studio albums and featured on three live albums before leaving to concentrate on his solo career. The two met when Chris Squire was working on a solo album and needed some guitar parts. Chris was put in touch with Steve and through these sessions the idea for SQUACKETT was born. Over four years in the making, the Squackett album is very much more than the sum of its parts. It was very much about a bunch of pals swapping notes and anecdotes, says Hackett I think the material is simple and direct. It has a flavour to it that is reminiscent of a few things from different artists, says Squire. There is some clever Prog Rock stuff on the album, some jazzy bits, but there are parts that have vocal harmonies like Crosby, Stills and Nash – SQUACKETT is THE major Progressive Rock release of 2012.

DIVING BELL
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS/ANTENNA ECD8000 - UK, 2010 |

DIVING BELL, the excellent debut album by Oxford’s SANGUINE HUM. Featuring JOFF WINKS (vocals, guitars, drum programming and samples), MATT BABER (Rhodes, synthesizer, percussion, mini drum kit), BRAD WAISSMAN (bass) and PAUL MALLYON (drums, percussion, mini drum kit), the band was formed from the ashes of the Joff Winks Band and the Antique Seeking Nuns (a heady mix of Zappa and Canterbury influenced instrumental compositions with songwriting that owed much to artists such as Robert Wyatt). However, after a year of not performing live and only working in the studio, the need for the duo to be back in a band reached a feverish pitch. So with an ever-mounting pile of new songs the members of the Joff Winks Band came back together under the new moniker of Sanguine Hum, recording the album Diving Bell in 2011. Initially released in limited quantities on the Troopers for Sound website, the album is a complex ensemble work, featuring profound song writing, uniquely ambitious instrumental pieces and an equally important attention to the sonic landscape of the music as a whole, giving the band its defining characteristics. Sanguine Hum continue to pursue diverse areas of writing flitting between intense instrumental pieces and unorthodox songwriting. Influenced as much by Zappa and Mahavishnu Orchestra as they are by bands such as Tortoise, Sanguine Hum create avant-prog-post-rock with groove and melody to spare.
This new edition of "Diving Bell” adds three new songs and sees the Oxford quartet consolidate an already remarkably varied career, showcasing a new and exciting immediacy in their song writing that recalls the very best of Radiohead, Porcupine Tree and the Flaming Lips.

WIRED TO EARTH (digipack)
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS/ANTENNA ECD8003 - UK, 2011 |
|
Wired To Earth is the stunning debut album from Swindon Prog rockers Tin Spirits, featuring former XTC guitarist Dave Gregory. Released Grounded in prog’s 70s stylings but a nod to darker climes on the band’s own VIBROLA label, the album is marketed by Esoteric Recordings’ new front-line label, ESOTERIC ANTENNA, dedicated to new releases by both new acts and established artists. Fans of Dave Gregory, (one of the most original and inventive guitarists the UK has ever produced), will find him in scintillating form on this new release. The album comprises four original compositions, along with a cover of the Genesis classic 'Back in NYC', a heavy hint as to some of the influences at work here. With its complex arrangements, ambitious scale and outstanding musicianship, Wired To Earth channels the spirit of 1970s Progressive rock, yet it remains firmly anchored to the present by strong melodies and irresistible hooks. This is Progressive Rock with impeccable pop sensibilities, and it provides a fittingly rich and varied backdrop for Dave Gregory's superb guitar work. His trademark blend of psychedelic '60s jangle, '70s rock riffing and new wave angularity has never sounded more compelling or vital. However, the band is far from a mere star vehicle for the ex-XTC man. With song-writing duties split four ways, this quartet is about four musicians brought together purely by their love of making music. The band was formed in 2008, when guitarist Daniel Steinhardt invited his friend and musical hero Dave Gregory to come and jam with The Hi-Fidels, a Swindon-based trio made up of Steinhardt, bassist/vocalist Mark Kilminster and drummer Doug Mussard. An instant connection was made, and what began as four people getting together to play covers for their own enjoyment was clearly destined for greater things. Two and a half years on, fresh from supporting Marillion in front of 3,000 people at the Marillion Weekend 2011 festival in Port Zélande, Netherlands, Tin Spirits have delivered one of the most exciting Progressive Rock releases of the year so far.

PHOS
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD8012 - GREECE, 1976 |
|
Esoteric Recordings announce the first ever UK CD release of a true gem by Greek Progressive rock group Socrates. Formed in 1971, the band was originally known as Socrates Drank the Conium and featured John Spathas on Lead Guitar, Antonis Tourkogiorgis on bass and guitar and George Tradalidis on drums. The band recorded three albums for Polydor in a heavy progressive vein before shortening their name to Socrates. Signing with Vertigo Records, the band travelled to London to record their greatest album, Phos. Legendary Greek musician and composer Vangelis not only produced the record, but also played Keyboards throughout the album and co-wrote the excellent instrumental Every My Dream Comes To An End. As with compatriots Aphrodite’s Child, the band fused Progressive rock with traditional Greek musical influences with great success, particularly on pieces such as Mountains and Starvation. A much sought after release by Progressive rock fans and Vangelis collectors, this edition of PHOS has been newly remastered, fully restores the album artwork and includes a new essay.

LAND OF COCKAYNE
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD7765 - UK, 1981 |
|
This record contains a saxophone-oriented jazz/fusion music. It sounds a bit like Spyro Gyra. There are big names involved here: Allan Holdsworth on guitars and Jack Bruce on bass. Dick Morissey and Ray Warleigh are absolutely outstanding on saxophones: they are never dull! Jack Bruce gives a solid performance, producing a very punchy and complex bass sound. The floating keyboards are loud and the overall sound refreshes like a mint candy does in the mouth; the rhythmic and melodic keyboards (tons of electric piano) sound like the George Duke's work of the 70's. The drums are very well played and sophisticated. Here again, it is another complex and structured record for the jazz fan. (greenback - Rate Your Music)

The final live recordings to be released by the band during their lifetime, Alive & Well was the product of several nights of excellent concerts at Le Palace Theatre in Monmartre, Paris in July 1978. The album was initially released as a single album, although the discovery of multi-track masters of a concert in the archives has resulted in this expanded edition with a CD of additional material recorded in July 1978.

SOFTS
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD7694 - UK, 1976 |

Holdsworth is replaced by Etheridge ( no ! not the dyke) from Darryl Way's Wolf and as Ratledge is bowing out (it had become foreseeable by listening well to Bundles), should this still be called Soft Machine after this one? Ratledge still contributes synth works on two or three tracks. Please note that Alan Wakeman holds no relationship (at least none clearly announced) to the keyboardist with the star-sprinkled cape. Although the surprise of Bundles is gone , this is still a good album though, and the progression is quite impressive . One can say that even with no original members , Soft Machine managed to keep its musical aesthetics quite clear until the last album (Cockayne) when they should've called it a day . Ban Ban Caliban is really impressive with its 9 min+ lenght and full energy. As usual Marshall blesses us with yet another drum solo on side 2. A clear relation is alluded to the previous album when you come to the second track of side 2 called Second Bundle. This album is just as good as the previous Bundles and is yet another high point in Soft Machine's lenghthy career ( Vol1&2, third , 6, Bundles, and this one). Much recommended. However with each new album after this one , they will sound a bit more mainstream Jazz-rock. (Sean Trane - Progarchives)

SKIN
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS/ANTENNA ECD7999 - UK, 2012 |
|
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the latest release on their front-line label, ESOTERIC ANTENNA, dedicated to new releases by both new acts and established artists. SKIN is the latest album from CLASSIC ROCK PROG Poll winners PANIC ROOM and is one of the most eagerly anticipated albums by a band on the new wave of British Progressive Rock groups. The album, the band’s third, is arguably the finest yet by ANNE MARIE HELDER (Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards, Flute), JONATHAN EDWARDS (Keyboards), PAUL DAVIES (Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals), YATIM HALIMI (Bass) and GAVIN GRIFFITHS (Drums). SKIN is a dark and shimmering jewel, featuring 11 new and original tracks which all bear the hallmark sound of Panic Room - both powerful and intimate, passionate and playful, epic and yet truthful and heartfelt. The album has a vast and expansive feel : gracefully weaving its way through rock-solid riffs and potent grooves, there are moments of intense power, heart-stopping gravity, and delicate beauty. This is the sound and dynamic of Panic Room brought to a new level. Featuring the unique style-play and musical freedom that Panic Room are famous for, and which has seen them transcend any genre or limitation, the album also unveils a distinct and deliciously dark sound all of its own the sound of 'SKIN'. A stunning collection of songs, all telling a story of their own, the album has a definite feel and continuity at the same time; a distinct mood of its own.
'SKIN' is beguiling, hypnotic, dark, sensual, emotional, and raw beautiful, reflective, and true. The album title reflects all of the key elements in the music PANIC ROOM has created - the intimacy, the rawness and the power that is SKIN.

BUNDLES
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD7665 - UK, 1975 |
|
By 1974 the legendary Soft Machine switched record labels from CBS / Columbia (after releasing five magnificent albums on that label) to EMI's progressive Harvest label, on which they would release the band's last four albums before their epic story would finally come to an end. But the label switch was in fact only an exterior manifestation of the deep changes that the group was experiencing at the time. In retrospect, the four Harvest albums mark a completely new phase in the band's musical direction, leaving behind the Free Jazz / Improvised Music extremes in favor of more structured and composed music, with strong melodic elements and almost mainstream Jazz-Rock sound. The most significant factor, which brought about the change, was Elton Dean's replacement by oboe, saxophone and piano player Karl Jenkins, who also became the most prolific composer of the band's new material. The second factor was the decision to include a permanent guitarist into the band's ranks, which was to change the sound significantly from Jazz to Jazz-Rock. This was the first of the Harvest albums, with the Soft Machine lineup comprising of Jenkins, keyboardist Mike Ratledge, guitarist Alan Holdsworth, bassist Roy Babbington and drummer John Marshall. Saxophonist Ray Warleigh helps out on one tune. The music is quite different from anything the band recorded previously, based upon shorter and beautifully composed melody lines. There is still plenty of improvisation by the players, but it's much more settled and well organized. Holdsworth delivers some of his best playing to date but the overall level of musicianship is astounding. In retrospect this is still one of the best British Jazz-Rock albums and a magnificent piece of music history. An absolute must! (Jazzis - Rate Your Music)

LOVE AND OTHER MYSTERIES
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS/ANTENNA ECD7998 - UK, 2012 |
|
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the latest release on their front-line label, ESOTERIC ANTENNA, dedicated to new releases by both new acts and established artists. Love and Other Mysteries by KEN HENSLEY is the result of three years spent in the studio, crafting an intensely personal album. Known by many from his days as a writer and member of URIAH HEEP, the writer of such classics as Lady in Black and July Morning has created his deepest work to date. He explains; No-one is free from emotion and its effects. No one. I am a poet and songwriter with the dreams and ambitions of an 11-year-old boy still running rampant in my heart. The songs on this CD came to me as naturally as breathing, from the source I have always believed in and in which I now believe more strongly than ever. I think this CD represents a very positive shift in my musical focus and for me it is exciting to travel new and unexplored territory. It must be every songwriter´s dream to be able to make a record in this way! I know it was mine. The lyrics are the single most important thing on this album and it is these words that were permitted to produce and guide the direction of the album. Love and Other Mysteries sees Ken joined by guest vocalists including Glenn Hughes, Santra Salkova, Sarah Rope, Irene Forniciari & Roberto Tiranti – All of whom compliment a record that is fulfilling and sincere in its message.

Musica Ficta, guided by guitarist and composer Udi Horev and established in Jerusalem in 2003, is a clear example of what could mean a true reference to the past, in particular the English rock scene from the 70s, and at the same time a really fresh creativity. Here you can find echoes of Jethro Tull, but not only – a bit of ELP and King Crimson, among others. These six musicians come from classical, rock, folk, jazz: the result is a coherent sound with a really high technical level, from powerful rock songs to delicate acoustic textures.

Subtilior’s deus ex machina is Michele Epifani, band leader and keyboard player from Areknames. In Absence upon a ground Epifani dresses the part of the composer above all: deeply influenced by classical contemporary music, he finds both an expressive and intricate way to build up an unquiet mood, with rapid changes of sonic scenario. Remarkable arrangements, with electric and acoustic instruments (among the others, Fasoli and Cipollone as guests from Yugen). Darkly fascinating.

The Village to the Vale, by the Brighton-based band Autumn Chorus, is one of the most interesting debut album of 2012. Try to imagine a green and pleasant landscape, really old-Brit, or the magnificent sound of a cathedral, and you’ll get the point of this music. Robbie Wilson’s voice is sustained by electric ad vintage sounds – recalling English classical symphonic and Sigur Ros – and orchestral music, as in a dreamy film soundtrack. A masterpiece between prog, folk, post-rock. Between past and future.

These are not just a mere document of the era: besides different (and enlarged) versions of well-known songs, here you can find rarities and unreleased tracks. Another surprising band from California. The direct inspiration of this band is the most genuine progressive rock from the 70s, but without hollow virtuosity and open to the most eccentric influences. In great evidence the melody, always unexpected but immediate and able to take a firm hold on the listener. Sounds are really accurate too: besides the typical rock and vintage instrumentation, you can find horns, percussions and strings. Surely a modern and original approach and to art rock.

After Guy Manning’s success with his mostly solo album “Tall Stories For Small Children” (CYCL 078), it has persuaded him to get his own group together. Along with Po90 man Andy Tillison on keyboards and long time friends Jonathan Barrett on bass and Simon Buskind on drums he has augmented the sound of symphonic keyboards with two violinists and a saxophone player. Much more upbeat than Tall Stories, this is an epic concept in three acts and recalls Pink Floyd/Roger Waters, Genesis and, of course, Po90. The band have worked on this piece for long periods to polish the instrumental breaks with great keyboard and guitar interplay. Look out for the threatened gigs soon. After having released two self-financed albums, the British neo-proggers Also Eden are now under contract with Festival Music and this 'Think Of The Children!', a concept album, is the first studio album for their new employer. I have to be honest: it?s the first time that I listen to the output of this five piece, but their brand of neo-prog sounds quite pleasing to my ears. Of course there are influences from the classic prog bands from the glorious 70s, but I can also hear some shreds from a band like Porcupine Tree, to name only one more recent act. I always listen to prog albums by means of headphones and with the booklet with lyrics in my hand and I can only admit that lyricist & vocalist Rich Harding has a lot of talent. Musically there?s also enough ?light and shade?, so that I can give these guys and their album the thumbs up. (RockReport)

WHEN AGE HAS DONE ITS DUTY
F2 RECORDS ECD7904 - UK, 2011 |
|
"Cosmograf is a progressive rock project led by talented, UK based multi-instrumentalist Robin Armstrong.""When Age Has Done Its Duty"" is the product of a strong vision which does not follows any trends. It is a concept album about growing old and coming to terms with it. That means the album is very melancholic and themed towards an issue most people have difficult dealing with. There are a lot of references to Manning, The Tangent, Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree. The sound is excellent. It needs to be because the songs demands full clarity. The songs has some hard guitars and some great electric guitar solos. But most of all this is a pastoral album which does not shout. It rather whisper most of the time. Rob Armstrong has a special voice which is superb and perfectly well suited for the material on this album. But it is not the (painful) familiarity with the stuff and lyrical topics on this album which awards this album almost a top score in my view. It is the melodies and the whole ambience of the album which I am falling for. Highly recommended neo-Prog with great atmospheres. (Fantasyman - Rate Your Music)"

WAR AND PEACE & OTHER SHORT STORIES
F2 RECORDS ECD0889 - UK, 2011 |
|
This album is a wonderfully varied musical fare: symphonic melodies and strong rockier parts are blended with bombast and drama, ambient sounds, enchanting ballads, orchestral keyboards, and great noise / electronic sampled sounds. All of this is used by Filkins to underline his perceptions on the state of the human race and of man's inhumanity to man; From the outset this album holds the listeners attention and interest not only in the musical landscape painted by each ensemble the majority of which I would describe as epic. In times of beige carpets and plain walls Mr Filkins has returned to rich tapestry and Persian rugs. By this analogy I refer to the use of every part of the soundstage utilising many talents and resources not least himself. Moving on to the Roger Waters type opening of “Prisoner Of Conscience” I was consumed by the depth and diversity demonstrated throughout this piece. The differences in musical styles and instrumentation make the story told by this rock operetta something rather special. Using instruments such as Tabla, Garima, Sitar and even a didgeridoo brought about a “world music” feel to the opening segment of the song. Split into two parts, part one being “The Soldier” and part two “The Ordinary man”, “Prisoner Of Conscience is about Sean’s maternal grandfather who went missing in world war two whilst out on patrol. Sean’s daughter Abigail assists the dramatic beginnings of “Epitaph For A Mariner” by singing the traditional hymn “sailors Hymn” Another 20 minute job split into five parts, all the elements of which I found fascinating. The piece is all about Sean’s great grandfather William Pull who was lost at sea off the coast of Margate during a violent storm. Yet again I found myself using the word EPIC. The beautiful finale of the album is an original instrumental piece from 1996 written by Geoff Webb who also plays acoustic guitar and keyboards not only here but elsewhere on the album. Originally entitled “Pastoral” Sean heard the piece whilst recording in the studio at which Geoff was employed. The slowest and sweetest of all the songs on the album it exudes optimism. I identified with this song as it is all about coming to terms with one’s past working towards a brighter future. Good to hear the reprise of the sitar and tabla drums linking the songs with the previous gems. Bringing all to a satisfactory conclusion using Mellotron sounds, mandolin and other such Prog weaponry leaves the listener in no uncertain doubt in which genre Sean Filkins sits comfortably into. I commend him for thinking outside of the box. For utilising the talents of expert help and artistry, returning to the roots of telling great stories using music. (Fantasyman - Rate Your Music)

Another beautiful journey into Solstice music world featuring female vocals, violin and involved themes. Recommended!..Following New Life, Circles was released in 1997, and the band moved forward with a set of new material. Framed by two meditative instrumentals, Salú and Coming Home, Circles is perhaps the most impassioned Solstice album. Fronted by Emma Brown, perhaps their strongest vocalist to date, the band had never sounded so powerful on disc. Bolstered by ex-Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker, the sound produced is full, dynamic and committed. This is an album of real concern about the mess we’re making of our planet, lifted up by the celebration of human potential to change. This remastered definitive edition release includes four bonus tracks, including an early version of Medicine, available on CD for the first time.

The album loads us with a 35 minute piece - no less than that! Very nice music that takes us to parts that could very well come from an album of Tillison (The Tangent) most certainly an idea that is suggested by the sound of the keyboard (organ mode). On sung passages, the voice of Guy Manning appears both Folk and Country. Although I still can not enjoy his voice, I am completely invested by the music of this epic but also by the 4 quiet pleasant pieces (T.I.C. is a bit Rock'n'Roll) that fill the album before the final piece. Final piece comes very close to Jazz-rock style sometimes. The beautiful orchestrations and arrangements definitely wanted to give this album its worth. (BronDune - Rate Your Music)

TALL STORIES FOR SMALL CHILDREN (slim digipack)
F2 RECORDS ECD2149 - UK, 1999 |
|
Part time member/collaborator of Parallel or 90 Degrees, Guy Manning here produces a worthy companion to that groups work. Three epic suites comprise the main length of the album giving Guy time to weave his great vocals around beautifully constructed lyrics dealing with Religion / War / Mankind – sorry no Dragons, Princesses in Castles or Gnomes in Magicland here. There is, however, plenty of fine instrumental work especially on the longer pieces with beautiful guitar playing by Guy and driving Hammond by PO90 man Andy Tillison. Guy also incorporates into his musical creations great sound effects that bring the lyrics to life, in much the same way as Roger Waters does. A great work for those that like PO90, Roger Waters/Pink Floyd, Anthony Phillips – Geese and the Ghost, Roy Harper. This will be Guy Manning's 12th release, and continues the story started on 'Ansers Tree', released in 2006. Guy was previously an associate of Parallel or 90 Degrees (PO90) and also a founder member of the internationally respected, The Tangent. Guy has an impressive record of having a new Manning album ready for release annually!! "Manning produce an eclectic mix of music which broadly falls within the 'progressive' genre, but in reality spans many different musical forms from beautiful ballads and folk-tinged songs through to awesome all-out rock workouts and true progressive epics – no two songs sound the same!".

THE BIG RED SPARK (CD+DVD)
F2 RECORDS ECD7901 - UK, 2010 |
|
The Big Red Spark is an attempt to create an epic concept album. 'It is the story of the machine that Nietzsche had dreamed of: the story of the Big Red Spark. And here I start my story right where I ended life all imperfect, unevolving, out of time, and out of fight no family surrounding me but my work, my love, my debt the loose ends of my life?. The concept and music are good but too often the album tends to sound bombastic and at these moments progressive rock sounds more as just progressive routine. ?The world is made of many pages and every page contains a world we flicker through them in the daytime but in the night become unfurled?. Some pages contain the worlds of madness it seems. (Babe_N_Co - Rate Your Music)

SILENT DANCE (2CD)
F2 RECORDS ECD7235 - UK, 1984 |

Originally released in 1974 on the BASF label they only made one album and then disappeared but this is definitely an obscure classic of the 70s Italian progressive music scene. A concept album with two long tracks mixing killer heavy rock with classical influences. Fans of King Crimson, ELP and Le Orme will dig it. Original artwork and housed in a mini gatefold LP style package with two inserts (concept story and band info). (Freak Emporium)...Soaring violin and guitar weaving around delicately passionate female vocals, underpinned by driving rhythmic complexity, Solstice were an unlikely band to succeed in 1980s Britain. Yet audiences revelled in the band’s performances at all the major festivals and sell-out tours, on which they made the legendary Marquee club their home. THE CROPREDY SET (CD+DVD)
F2 RECORDS ECD7519 - UK, 2002 |
|
Thirteen years after the brace of sell-out ‘farewell’ concerts at London’s legendary Marquee club, it was finally time to release a live album. And, given the subsequent demolition of the old Marquee, what better location for such a recording than a festival stage? The venue was Cropredy, Fairport Convention’s annual celebration of the finest in folk, rock and everything in between. The sun shone on a huge crowd as Solstice – now augmented by Jenny Newman on violin, Robin Phillips on bass and Steve McDaniel on keyboards – took the stage for a set that began with a sequence of old favourites before concentrating on newer material. Most of these were from the then-recent Circles album, but there was also space for a band version of Awakening from Clive Bunker’s solo album, along with the new instrumental, Ducks on the Pond. Cropredy marked a triumphant return to the big stage, but problems with the sound meant that the recording was unusable. So, the band set up in the studio the following day and replayed the set – live without an audience – which makes up this album. This remastered definitive edition release includes a bonus DVD featuring the Cropredy concert, dubbed with the re-recorded audio. It may be a little rough but it’s essential watching for any Solstice fan and available here for the very first time.

NEW LIFE (2CD)
F2 RECORDS ECD1847 - UK, 1993 |
|
Around ten years later their debut this is the second work by this fascinating and dreaming new prog band...With Andy Glass at the controls, the production was much closer to the live sound than on Silent Dance, with a fuller dynamic doing justice to the bass playing, adding depth and power to the stage favourites that hadn’t made it onto the debut. The lavish swathes of keyboards are still present, but Marc Elton’s violin is more prominent, blending with Andy Glass’ guitar to frame Heidi Kemp’s commanding vocals. A stunning album throughout, including the two epics, Guardian and Journey, tapestries of mood and colour which move from the meditative to the exuberant with a confidence that encompasses all the diverse elements which combine to make Solstice’s music unique. This remastered definitive edition release includes a bonus disc featuring two demos plus rare live recordings of the band from 1984 and 1985, released here for the very first time.

FILE THIS DREAM (digipack)
F2 RECORDS ECD6422 - HOLLAND, 2008 |
|
In 1999 Egdon Heath retired, following 18 years in the world of prog during which they released four studio albums and a double-live album of their final gig. As from January 2000, Jaap Mulder (keyboards, vocals), Aldo Adema (guitar), Marcel Copini (bass) and Maurits Kalsbeek (vocals) worked on new material with the new drummer Erik Koning, a Genesis fan all his life. Karlsbeek quit the band but the four remaining members continued without a singer for a considerable time, exploring new horizons and experimenting with new influences and styles. Then the band came in contact with Han Uil, singer-songwriter and former singer/guitarist of Antares, and with him in the band, they fine-tuned the almost finished compositions, with Han writing the lyrics. The album was at last complete!

THE SEVENTH DEGREE OF SEPARATION (CD+DVD)
VERGLAS ECD7879 - UK, 2011 |

Arena are back! And what a comeback it is, too! Pepper's Ghost has its moments (The Eyes of Lara Moon and Opera Fanatica) but it was a bit lackluster, to be honest. The band's latest great album dates all the way back in 2003 with Contagion. So we're here in 2011, 6 years since the last album, with a new singer and a new album. I'm glad to say that this album far from desecrates this British band's legacy. It's not as proggy as it could be but it's super catchy and fun to listen to, with Paul Manzi being an excellent vocalist and fitting in quite well here. Some of the songs really let his voice stick out, like One Last Au Revoir, Bed of Nails and the epic Catching the Bullet. Speaking of which, Catching the Bullet also shows that the band is still in perfect musical shape. The somewhat mellow closer (which turns into an epic, powerful finale with an abrupt ending) also is a highlight for me. While I wouldn't say this reaches the level of their essential albums like The Visitor, Immortal? or Contagion, this is miles ahead of Pepper's Ghost for me and is another great album under their belt from this terrific band. OUT OF MYSELF
LASERS EDGE ECD6698 - POLAND, 2004 |
|
The album “Out Of Myself” by the Polish progrock band Riverside was very appriciated, personally it was one of my favorite CD’s from 2004. It contains five studio-tracks and three live songs (recorded at the Traffic Club Warsaw in the Polish capital in May 2004). The atmosphere on most of the new tracks is mellow featuring warm and distinctive English vocals and soaring keyboards along beautiful twanging acoustic guitar (“Us”), a great, very moving electric guitar solo and delicate pianoplay (“Acronym Love”), acoustic rhythm-guitar and melancholic vocals (“The time I was daydreaming) and vocal harmonies and howling electric guitar (“Stuck Between”). The third track “Dna ts. Rednum or F. Raf” is more in the vein of the album “Out Of Myself”: a hypnotizing atmosphere, fiery electric guitar, an agressive bass, propulsive drums and exciting changes of climate, from dreamy with acoustic guitar to bombastic with fiery electric guitarwork.”. The three live songs are “I Believe” (sensitive and fiery electric guitarplay, beautiful piano and vocals), “Loose Heart” (great build up) and “Out Of Myself” (great rendition of their best song). My conclusion: the new tracks on “Voices In My Head” sound more laidback and less exciting than “Out Of Myself” but in my opinion RIVERSIDE still delivers wonderful, very warm and compelling progrock. NIGHTINGALE EXPRESS (digipack)

A Liquid Landscape from The Netherlands has been a live act for several years and shared the stage with bands like Karnivool (AUS), Anathema (UK), Thrice (US) and Riverside (Poland). During the past year the band also was a finalist at the prestigious annual Dutch Grand Prize contest and on top of that they had 3 sold out Noorderzon gigs, featuring a stunning visual show. With all the material they had written, the band reached out to Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Helmet). Forrester liked the material a lot and he agreed on mixing the album and doing some production work as well. Nightingale Express is a concept album. This inspired moviemaker Lex Vesseur to make a short movie with music from the album. He also made the artwork and the visuals for the live show. (Amazon)

UNDER A NEW SIGN
LASERS EDGE ECD7265 - HOLLAND, 2007 |
|
The Dutch masters of prog return with their long awaited second album, “Under A New Sign.” Three years ago KNIGHT AREA stunned the progressive rock world with their debut‚ “The Sun Also Rises.” KNIGHT AREA creates epic symphonic rock in the vein of GENESIS, MARILLION, IQ, and PENDRAGON. Originally conceived as a studio project by the brothers GERBEN and JOOP KLAZINGA, KNIGHT AREA evolved into a touring band drawing quite a bit of attention in Europe. The band was honored to receive an invitation to perform in the US at NEARFEST 2005, where they picked up many new fans. “Under A New Sign” marks the first recordings of KNIGHT AREA as a true band, with other members having creative input. The band’s installed fan base need not worry‚ the music is essentially the same but with some harder edge guitars. The new album should also appeal to fans of heavier progressive bands like ARENA and DREAM THEATER. KNIGHT AREA uses a full sonic palette that will stir the soul of any old or new school symphonic rock fan. Mellotron/flute interplay, Hammond organ, fluid lead synth and soaring guitar solos - its all here! Dramatic vocals and a dynamic mix propel the music. Noted mastering engineer BOB KATZ gave the music an expansive and epic feel. R The full color CD package features gorgeous artwork by noted digital artist MATTIAS NOREN.

THE SUN ALSO RISES
LASERS EDGE ECD6697 - HOLLAND, 2004 |
|
A few months ago I witnessed a gig from KNIGHT AREA near Amsterdam, I was stunned by their compelling progrock and their professional attitude. No wonder that they got a contract from the famous USA progrock label The Laser’s Edge and I was told by their bass player Gijs Koopman (I know him as a fan from his former band CLIFFHANGER) that KNIGHT AREA already sold more than 8000 copies from their debut-CD “The Sun Also Rises”, an incredible performance by this very promising new Dutch progrock band! If you listen to their music, you soon will be delighted by the wonderful sound in the vein of mid-GENESIS, MARILLION, IQ and PENDRAGON. The 10 melodic, alternating and tasteful progrock compositions feature lots of majestic Mellotron waves and flashing synthesizer runs (the back cover from the booklet shows a picture from the sensational Minimoog) and sensitive electric guitar soli along beautiful instrumentation with flute, accordion and acoustic guitar. In my opinion this CD (50 minutes) is a splendid 24-carat symphonic rock album that deserves a worldwide recognition. By the way, KNIGHT AREA will perform on the annual Nearfest progrock festival in the USA on July 10th (along with Le ORME and KENSO). I hope you will be lucky to get a ticket because this festival was sold out within half an hour! Anyway, I’m sure KNIGHT AREA will impress many progheads on Nearfest! REALM OF SHADOWS
LASERS EDGE ECD7572 - HOLLAND, 2009 |
|
It seems to me that Knight Area gets a little better with each release...Even if they had lost two members along the way (including one of the Klavinga brothers), the new release shows the band still growing strong and the songwriting maturing even more. While I can´t really say it is a masterpiece, there is little doubt that those guys from Holland are on the right path to deliver something like that anytime soon. The band is much tighter, the arrangements are more concise and they are now sounding very much like their own. It is always good to see a good group finding their way of delivering good, melodic prog with passion and conviction. I specially liked how the members are sounding better and still they are team players: every instrument comes and goes at the right time, with no unnecessary display of virtuosity. I especially liked Gijs Koopman´s bass lines, very precise and reminding me of the great Chris Squire. The keyboards are very well the lead instrument (echoes of Genesis around the time of Wind & Wuthering are quite recurring here), while the guitar is a little subtle, but very well played. Mark Smit´s singing is getting better with each release. The production is quite good too. All in all I found Realm Of Shadows to be a fine CD with some great moments and no fillers to be find. Nothing new or groundbreaking here, but still excellent, beautiful music. If you´re into neo prog, or melodic music in general, this is a must have. (T.Moura)

GRÖTESK (digipack)
FREE ELECTRIC SOUND ECD7922 - FRANCE, 2007 |
|
Grötesk is the third album from this French trio. Their two previous albums brought them world wide acclaim for their intriguing amalgam of jazz and metal fused together with a strong dose of Zappa-esque humor. MÖRGLBL was born in 1996 after noted guitarist CHRISTOPHE GODIN decided to form an instrumental fusion rock band. After meeting JEAN PIERRE FRELEZEAU (drums) and IVAN ROUGNY (bass), they decided to work together on the project. In 1997, Morglbl’s first cd named Ze Mörglbl Trio!! (IHL) was released and received good reactions from the French press. The band toured intensively in France, placing Christophe as one of France’s top guitar players. In 1999, the band’s second album Bienvenue a Mörglbl Land (IHL) was released. The band toured Europe, and Christophe started working as ambassador for LANEY AMPS, VIGIER GUITARS, ZOOM EFFECTS and ALVAREZ acoustic guitars. In 2000, MÖRGLBL disbanded, and Christophe released one CD with metal band GNO (Trash Deluxe, Janvier Rec.) and became an in-demand worldwide clinician. Ivan toured with fusion guitarist CYRIL ACHARD and Y. MALMSTEEN’s drummer MIKE TERRANA, as well as rai star CHEB BILAL. In 2004, Christophe started his first solo project, named METAL KARTOON, and asked Jean Pierre and Ivan to be part of the band. The CD was released in 2005 (Christophe Godin’s Metal Kartoon, Nocturne) and did pretty well in France. Christophe toured intensively (Germany, Italy, China, South Korea, USA, UK). He also released one cd and toured Europe with jazz guitar legend PIERREJEAN GAUCHER (2G, Nocturne). After hitting the road regularly with Metal Kartoon, MÖRGLBL regrouped and started working on new material. They recorded their newest cd, Grotesk, and toured Russia, Italy, Germany, Holland, USA, as well as France of course, where their popularity rapidly grew after the news of their reunion spread. Christophe is going to be co-headliner of TOKYO SHRED FEST in November, part of his next Asian Tour (China, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore) as Laney ambassador. With the release of Grotesk, Mörglbl has created an album with cross genre appeal. Fans of shred and fusion Gods like ALLAN HOLDSWORTH, STEVE VAI or FREAK KITCHEN’s MATTIAS IA EKLUNDH will find much to sink their teeth.

Toons Tunes From The Past re-presents 1997’s Ze Mörglbl Trio!! and 1999’s Bienvenue a Mörglbl Land, along with 2 unreleased tracks. Over the years, MÖRGLBL has developed a unique sound mixing equal parts of ALLAN HOLDSWORTH’s virtuosity, the heaviness of PANTERA and FRANK ZAPPA’s off kilter humor. In 1997, MÖRGLBL’s . rst cd named Ze Mörglbl Trio!! was released and received a MÖRGLBL good reaction from the French press. The band toured intensively in France, placing Christophe as one of France’s top guitar players. In 1999, the band’s second album, Bienvenue a Mörglbl Land, was released. The band toured Europe, and Christophe started working as ambassador for LANEY AMPS, VIGIER GUITARS, ZOOM EFFECTS and ALVAREZ acoustic guitars. In 2000, MÖRGLBL disbanded, as the individual members pursued other projects. In 2007 MÖRGLBL regrouped and recorded their newest cd Grotesk (Free Electric Sound FES4006). The band toured Russia, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, the USA, as well as France of course, where their popularity rapidly grew after the news of their reunion spread. 2008 found MÖRGLBL touring the east coast of the United States, culminating in a mindbending performance at NEARFEST X that became the buzz of the festival. This was the .rst time in the 10 year history of Nearfest that an opening act received two encores! Mörglbl will be touring the US again in 2009. CD 1: 1. Links, 2. The Tale Of Thibault, 3. Streets And Traps, 4. Inside Power, 5. Il Bello di Notte, 6. Les Mécanismes du Temps, 7. Travels, 8. Mexico, 9. Lieutenant Colombin, 10. Strictement Con. dentiel, 11. Monishkolio, 12. THE REMEDY OF ABSTRACTION (digipack)
LASERS EDGE ECD7177 - USA, 2006 |
|
After the release of their groundbreaking fifth album, "Forgiving Eden," the instrumental rock duo of A Triggering Myth had only one direction to go -- expand the group concept even further. Once again, noted guitarist Scott McGill and drummer Vic Stevens were asked to contribute to the band's sixth album. World renowned bassist Michael Manring came aboard, fully integrating the three members of McGill Manring Stevens into the mix. Band founders Rick Eddy and Tim Drumheller wanted to add some additional sonic textures, so they made contact with violinist Akihisa Tsuboy of the Japanese fusion band KBB. He graciously agreed to contribute as a guest offering up two smoking hot solo spots. Once again A Triggering Myth continue to evolve and push the boundaries of progressive music. Recommended to fans of Soft Machine, National Health, and Happy the Man. "The Remedy of Abstraction" arrives in a beautiful digipak featuring artwork and graphic design by the award winning Travis Smith.

PERSEVERANCE
FREE ELECTRIC SOUND ECD5501 - USA, 2003 |
|
Woodenhead's music is a spicy gumbo of jazz fusion, symphonic rock and local R 'n' B flavors. "Perseverance", the band's 6th album, was recorded live in New Orleans and captures all the energy and emotional playing of a Woodenhead gig. Augmented by a horn section, the band's music comes across as a blend of the Dixie Dregs, Happy The Man, and Hot Rats-era Zappa. This is an album with broad appeal to fans of jazz rock, prog rock and even Cajun music.

NINE PATHS
LASERS EDGE ECD7917 - HOLLAND , 2011 |
|
Nine Paths is the fourth album from respected Dutch band Knight Area. They have garnered attention around the world performing in North America multiple times as well as tours throughout Europe. Knight Area has performed at NEARfest in the US as well as The Night of the Prog Festival in Germany. Not content to simply stick to a musical formula, KNIGHT AREA will surprise their fan-base with Nine Paths. While remaining firmly faithful to the symphonic rock tradition the band has gone one step further and added a harder edge to their sound. This transformation comes courtesy of noted producer Neil Kernon Cannibal Corpse, Queensryche, Nile) who's mix has provided a more contemporary approach to progressive rock. The Track 'Please come Home' features a guest vocal appearance by Charlotte Wessels (Delain).

SHADOW BORDER
LASERS EDGE ECD7914 - HOLLAND , 2009 |
|
Shadow Border is the second album from Dutch progressive rock band The Aurora Project. Their 2005 debut, Unspoken Words, brought them much acclaim in the worldwide progressive rock community. The band has twice been invited to perform at the prestigious ProgPower Europe festival in Baarlo, Netherlands. After the demise of their record label, the band signed with The Laser’s Edge in 2008. TAP creates atmospheric progressive rock with a metallic edge – this is contemporary music for a forward thinking audience. Liquid keyboard solos duel with heavy, crunch filled guitar riffs.. Vocals take a theatrical approach ultimately reminding us that this is after all a prog band. Their ability to skillfully blur the fine line between prog rock and metal creates strong crossover potential that will find The Aurora Project appealing to fans of Riverside, Rush, Arena and Porcupine Tree.

HYBRID CHILD
LASERS EDGE ECD7916 - USA, 2010 |
|
District 97 is the only Progressive Rock band in the world to feature an American Idol finalist and a Chicago Symphony Orchestra virtuoso cellist. The band was formed in the Fall of 2006 by drummer Jonathan Schang, keyboardist Rob Clearfield, bassist Patrick Mulcahy and guitarist Sam Krahn. The foursome from Chicago honed a no-holds barred style of Liquid Tension Experiment inspired Instrumental Rock before deciding the right vocalist was needed to complement their sound; enter 2007 American Idol Top 10 Female Finalist, Leslie Hunt. With a look, sound and stage presence comparable to a young Ann Wilson from Heart, Leslie's dynamic performances pushed the band into a new direction that forged a unique marriage between accessible, catchy vocal melodies and an adventurous instrumental prowess. After attending a show and being highly impressed, Katinka Kleijn, cellist extraordinaire from the world-renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra, joined the band. She was followed shortly thereafter by one of Chicago's finest young guitarists, Jim Tashjian. With this new lineup of peerless musicianship in place, District 97 began wowing crowds and establishing a devoted fanbase through packed shows at legendary Chicago venues such as House of Blues, Schubas and Martyrs'. Hybrid Child balances a meticulous attention to detail and studio-craft with the visceral power of a rock band that is firing on all cylinders. Running the gamut from Meshuggah-inspired metal, the epic majesty of Yes, and the melodicism of the Beatles, Hybrid Child unveils District 97 as a true force to be reckoned with, and one that is poised to take the music world by storm. With fans ranging from high school students to world-class musicians, this process is clearly well underway.

THE OPENING
LASERS EDGE ECD7915 - FRANCE, 2010 |
|
THE OPENING IS A MUST HAVE ALBUM FOR FANS OF ATMOSPHERIC DARK PROG IN THE VEIN OF RIVERSIDE, PORCUPINE TREE AND TOOL. The landscape of progressive rock continues to evolve. As the dinosaur bands fade away a new breed of thought provoking artistry has emerged. Bands like Porcupine Tree, Tool, Riverside, and Anathema are not about complexity or grandiose arrangements. These are bands that aim for your heart as well as your head. CloverSeeds is a new band following this course. The Opening is their second release. Their debut was released on a small French label and gave the band some national attention including a television appearance on "Ca part en live". The Laser’s Edge is committed to expand CloverSeeds fanbase to a worldwide level. Cloverseeds music is a rollercoaster ride of pure emotion filled with melancholy and dark atmospheres augmented with guitar driven heaviness. The album was recorded in Germany at Spacelab Studios under the direction of Everon’s Christian Moschius. The resulting album is an audiophile spectacular polished to perfection by Grammy winning mastering engineer Bob Katz.

MEMORIES IN MY HEAD (digipack)
GLASSVILLE RECORDS ECD7931 - POLAND, 2011 |
|
Certainly over the past 7 years Riverside has become a very well know band in the progressive rock scene. Delivering 4 highly acclaimed albums and playing many shows and festivals, has put the polish band clearly in the upper region of the scene. After the intensive promotion and touring on the back of their 4th album Anno Domini High Definition, Riverside started composing new material at the end of 2010 for actually 2 albums. ADHD?s successor ,to be released in 2012, and the mini album entitled Memories In My Head. A special release composed to mark the 10th anniversary of the band this year. Main man (singer, bassplayer) Mariusz Duda says as follows: This new mini-album is about (for obvious reasons) themes of passing time and will be a pleasant surprise for those who have missed the specific kind of melodies and space known from the bands early releases. We have consciously gone back to our beginning, to create a kind of a circle. The three long compositions most resembling those from our first two albums. The result is a spacious, film-soundtrackish, nostalgic but most of all rock mixture, summing up our career's first decade quite well. With Memories In My Head we hope to surprise our fans and to evoke a lot of positive emotions.

NOT AS GOOD AS THE BOOK-SPECIAL ED. (2CD+BOOK)
INSIDE OUT MUSIC SHCD1778 - UK, 2008 |
|
"Style: Rock/Progressive || USED CD || M-/M- || Made in Germany || w/slipcase || w/book || The Tangent's fourth studio album, is the band's most ambitious project to date, with the Special Edition including a full short novel by band leader and keyboard player Andy Tillison. The album itself is a double CD package featuring shorter songs on the first disc and two epic tracks on the second. Although most of the Tangent's usual hallmarks are existent, there are some deviations into new areas, including the main theme of the problems facing many of us in midlife. Not As good As The Book also seeks to redress the imbalance created by the fact that most rock songs are about young peoples ideals and problems; the future that we dreamed of when we were young is here... and it's Not as Good as the Book! The Special Edition novel is a short and humorous fantasy, sci-fi story in which a character called Dave accidentally destroys the earth with a copy of ""Relayer"" by Yes. In fact the whole thing is full of references to progressive rock, sometimes nostalgic, and sometimes considering its future. The whole package (including the book) is beautifully illustrated in French comic book style (bande dessine) by the young and exciting artist, Antoine Ettori."

La Soluzione Semplice includes seven brandnew compositions featuring the typical symphonic sound of the 70's with the unmistakable use of keyboards who have marked an age, I mean piano, organ and the essential mellotron. A 90 minutes long concept album in a double CD with strong neo-psychedelic and avant-rock influences. Ref. F.Zappa, Mr.Bungle, King Crimson.

Trippa was a pre-Magenta project between 1995 and 2000 featuring Christina Booth (vocals) and Rob Reed (keyboards, guitar, bass). An abundance of Trippa material was recorded during that period and much of which has been gathered together for the 17 tracks that make up the new album. Demonstrating the song-orientated side of Rob and Christina?s writing abilities, it will be essential listening for all Magenta fans, plus anyone interested in inventive and dynamic music.

As for the setlist itself, the majority of the first CD is dedicated to then new Home album. Although the live renditions of that repertoire are quite good and sometimes even superior to their studio counterparts, the highlights are the single?s Speechless and the two songs from their Seven masterpiece: both Anger and Envy tourned out to be absolute great! CD 2 is almost totally devoted to their debut, Revolutions. The only exception is another track from Seven, a wonderful version of Sloth, quite superior to the original one. In fact, I think this CD have a stronger overall tracklist and the band is on top form too. Production is excellent and Christina is singing better than ever. (T.Moura - Progarchives)

The C-Sides were formed in 2007 by Magenta band members Martin Rosser, Allan Mason-Jones and Dan Fry. Taking a modern rock element and weaving it with the classic early 1970's Rush sound, they made the C-Sides. Featuring the layered guitars of Martin Rosser, the punchy drums of Allan Mason-Jones and the dynamic vocals of Dan Fry, the C-Sides came together to make a classic rock album, that also captures elements of the modern heavy bands of the moment.

AltaVia formed in 2008 in a small town in northern Italy, when after leaving his former band, Andrea Stagni (keyboards and vocals) started searching for new musicians. A friend introduced him to Marcello Bellina (drums, vocals), Mauro Monti (guitars, vocals) and Giuliano Vandelli (bass), who coincidentally were looking for a keyboard player for a new project. That just seemed to be a perfect match for everyone. After the first rehearsals session, they realized that even though they all came from different musical backgrounds, they were all eager to head in the same new direction. Backing vocalist Betty Copeta joined the band several months later. Everyone's peculiar expertise was brought to the table, making AltaVia's sound a curious mixture of classic rock, old-style prog and pop. Their main influences can be found both in the classic and neo prog scene, (Yes and Genesis, but also bands like IQ and It Bites) whilst also capturing rich orchestral atmospheres and catchy melodies.

EAST OF EDEN
WHITE KNIGHT RECORDS ECD7892 - UK, 2011 |
|
East Of Eden is Peter Gee?s (PENDRAGON) brand new solo album, exclusively released to dealers in July 2011 through White Knight Records. It is Peter Gee?s fourth solo album release and features stunning lead vocals from Damian Wilson (Threshold, Rick Wakeman) and Steve Thorne (Solo Artist, Jadis) and drums from Steve Christey (Jadis). This album is a good mixture of powerful rock songs, like Arabia, which has echoes of Led Zeppelin and The Ends Of The Earth, which has all the emotion of Camel ? right through to some beautiful melodic songs like Beautiful To Me and Andrea. But East Of Eden also offers some great groove tracks in Falling Star and I Want Out as well as six highly original and accomplished instrumental tracks which vary in style from the Mike Oldfield and Pink Floydesque One Day We?ll Meet Again through to the choral beauty of Hear Our Cry. All in all, this is a beautiful, powerful and highly melodic album with some great vocal and guitar performances on it. If you like good melodic songs and strong instrumental passages in the vein of Pendragon, Camel and Pink Floyd, then you must buy this album!

THIRTEEN EIGHT
WHITE KNIGHT RECORDS ECD7894 - SWEDEN, 2011 |
|
Mixing influences from Dream Theatre, Frost and Porcupine Tree with the more commercial bands as Muse, Jellyfish and Queen. This album really is progressive and accessible. Hailing from Sweden, FreddeGredde, initially rose to prominence in the early days of viral video revolution where his great musicianship gained attention on you tube and generated millions of views on some of his most popular videos. Larsson?s YouTube channel quickly became the number one subscribed channel in Sweden. It took almost two years for Larsson to execute his debut album, but it?s clear that the time was well spent since Thirteen Eight is one of those rare debuts that only comes once or twice every decade. Not only has the artist managed to make a clear statement of intent but there is also a clear tendency towards fusing the worlds of rock and pop music. The material shows a versatile approach which, in return, has potential of appealing just as much to fans of rock music as to the a casual listener.

LIVE AT THE POINT
TIGERMOTH RECORDS EDVD0113 - UK, 2008 |

With this, their second live concert DVD, Magenta admirably decided to feature a set list with as little overlap as possible with their first live DVD. The backside of this choice, however, is that, as The Gathering had featured the best tracks from their first two albums, this one inevitably had to hold the lesser tracks from these two albums. The great suite of tracks from their then new Home album saves the day here though, even if I would have preferred a performance of the unabridged Home album (my favourite of the Magenta studio albums). As always they open the show with Opus 3, played over the PA system (not performed). The first song performed is Speechless, a song that was released as a single and as such is a rather conventional Pop Rock song with some commercial appeal. Not my favourite. As I said above, the best tracks from that somewhat overrated album (Gluttony and Pride) were on the excellent The Gathering DVD and what was left for them to play here are the lesser tracks; Envy, Anger, and Sloth. The Revolutions album is similarly represented by some of its least good tracks in Man The Machine and The Warning. The great Genetesis and The White Witch are also performed, but in shortened versions. The latter is reduced from more than 20 minutes to some seven minutes! Almost needless to say, the full live version of the latter song featured on The Gathering is much preferable over this truncated one. The highlight of the show for me is the eight songs from the conceptual Home. Here, the band shines! Only here do I detect the kind of pure passion and energy that I liked so much about the band's previous live releases. Good, but it simply pales in comparison with the magnificent The Gathering DVD. FOR THE SAKE OF REVENGE (DVD+CD) (used)
NUCLEAR BLAST SHDVD0076 - FINLAND, 2006 |
|
Style: Metal/Power Metal || USED DVD || M/M || Made in Germany || PAL/All Regions || At first it may seem a little ludicrous for Finland's Sonata Arctica to be releasing the second live album of their career, with only four studio full-lengths (and a smattering of EPs) from which to populate their set list, but you won't hear their die-hard fans complaining. After all, these power metal champions don't have many casual fans; just outright haters or devoted followers for whom their rarely wavering sonic template and scientifically orchestrated stage show simply can't be improved upon. (Keep in mind that, like most of their melodically inclined Euro metal brethren, Sonata Arctica's stage show is essentially comprised of a scaled down reenactment of Iron Maiden's format, where meticulous musicianship seems to take precedence over spontaneity more often than not.) This is why the Fin's can get away with alternating their fast and slow numbers, almost without fail, and their fans seem to eat it right up! Heck, For the Sake of Revenge almost feels like a case study for this technique, as the audience is alternately buffeted with hurricane winds generated by the countless sixteenth notes and double kick drums contained in Misplaced, 8th Commandment, Black Sheep, and their like; or stranded in the dead calm surrounding majestic trad metal anthems and power ballads such as Blinded No More,Broken, and Graven Image. Death and black metal fans will of course get nothing out of this release (let's see them maintain a straight face as the band launches into the amazingly irony-free Victoria's Secret!), but For the Sake of Revenge is tailor-made for Sonata Arctica's unquestioning power metal devotees. R30 30TH ANNIVERSARY WORLD TOUR (2DVD) (used)
ANTHEM SHDVD0065 - CANADA, 2005 |
|
Style: Rock/Progressive || USED DVD || M-/M- || Made in Canada || NTSC/All Regions || Rush is one band with an overabundance of live CDs, home videos, and DVDs under their belt. But with a full-length live DVD issued in 2003 (Rush in Rio), was it overkill releasing another one just two years later? Realizing this, the band tried a slightly different approach on R30 (titled after the name of their 30th anniversary tour): one disc of a complete live show and a second disc of rarely seen archival footage. Recorded on September 24, 2004, in Frankfurt, Germany, disc one does a fine job of capturing modern-day Rush in concert. As with their last few tours, the veteran Canadian trio pulled out a forgotten nugget or two that hadn't been played in a dog's age, and this time out, the forgotten Grace Under Pressure gem ""Between the Wheels"" received an airing. But the real highlight is the all-instrumental opening sequence, which incorporates riffs and passages from Finding My Way, Anthem, Bastilles Day, A Passage to Bangkok, Cygnus X-1, and Hemispheres. Disc two, though, is what makes R30 a truly special item for longtime fans. It turns out that Geddy Lee's brother scoured the Rush archives for rare performances, and he did a splendid job, as evidenced by great, '70s-era performances of Finding My Way, Circumstances, and La Villa Strangiato, among others. Also included are some interesting and uncommon interviews, tops being a Q&A with Lee from 1979, one of the entire band together circa 1981, and separate interviews with all three circa 1990 (the latter of which covers the group's entire career up until that point). R30 will hopefully set a precedent for what other veteran rock bands should aim for on future DVD releases. (G.Prato)

GROWING UP LIVE (used)
REAL WORLD/WARNER MUSIC VISION SHDVD0073 - UK, 2003 |
|
Style: Rock/Pop || USED DVD || M-/M- || Made in the EU || PAL/All Regions || Digipack || Recorded in May 2003 at a single show in the Round in Milan, Italy, this documents Peter Gabriel's worldwide tour following his Up release. As such, it not surprisingly relies heavily on that disc, with seven of the 17 tracks originating from the album. Only about five tunes in this show can be considered hits (conspicuously absent is anything from his second and third albums) but most won't miss the many omissions since the performance is so consistently breathtaking. Gabriel is known for his elaborate, high-tech presentations and this certainly has its share of surprises. To reveal them would be unfair, since much of the excitement in watching a Gabriel show is seeing how his stage act -- here modernized for an in-the-round setting -- unfurls and reflects the songs. But suffice it to say, that unless you were there -- and even then -- Gabriel has plenty of tricks up his baggy black sleeves. Although he begins modestly, playing stark piano alone on an empty stage for a moving Here Comes the Flood, the ever-present and very visible orange-suited crew, which appears and disappears though trap doors in the fake floor, quickly adds the full band. Split screens display these techs looking bored under the stage, preparing for the next song, a video technique that is overused throughout the concert's 2 1/4 hour running time. Otherwise, the camera work is excellent, if a bit hyperactive at times. Vocal overdubs are kept to a minimum and the 5.1 surround mix is astonishingly vibrant and detailed. One new song, Animal Nation, is played, but it is not one of Gabriel's best and at nearly 15 minutes overstays its welcome. Also, the band introductions, which are chanted by the audience after the tune, might have been fun if you were there, but wear thin quickly. Still, this is a beautifully and imaginatively shot production caught in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Gabriel sounds great, as do the bandmembers, many of whom, like bassist Tony Levin and guitarist David Rhodes, are longtime associates. It's a must for any fan of the British star and a riveting performance even for those unfamiliar with his work. (Hal Horowitz)

EPIC MUSIC VIDEO SHDVD0094 - UK, 2005 |
|
Style: Rock/Psychedelic/Progressive || USED DVD || M-/EX || PAL/Region 0 || Made in the EU || Digipack || In 1994, Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi temporarily put aside their solo careers to re-form as Traffic for the first time in 20 years. (Of the original quartet formed in 1967, erstwhile member Dave Mason had not been a part of the band since 1971, and Chris Wood had died in 1983.) They recorded a new album, Far from Home, and embarked on a five-month tour of the U.S. in the spring and summer, using a backup band consisting of reed player Randall Bramblett, bassist Rosko Gee (a member of the 1974 version of Traffic), guitar and keyboard player Mike McEvoy, and percussionist Walfredo Reyes, Jr. Also taken along was filmmaker Simon Vieler, whose efforts finally see the light of day 11 years later in this, his 102-minute documentary of the tour, The Last Great Traffic Jam. The DVD package also includes a bonus CD EP, ""Traffic from the Archives,"" containing rehearsal performances of three songs. The CD unlocks video footage of the songs available on Winwood's website. RESPECT RECORDINGS SHDVD0093 - GERMANY, 2007 |
|
Style: Electronic/Ambient || USED DVD || EX/EX || Made in the UK || NTSC/All Regions || In December 1974 Tangerine Dream were invited to play in the grand setting of Rheims Cathedral, a move certainly seen at the time as groundbreaking. Because of this, they were then invited to perform in the cathedrals of York, Liverpool and Coventry. The tour attracted unprecedented coverage in the media, especially at Coventry Cathedral, an iconic building rising like a Phoenix on the ruins of the old cathedral bombed to bits by the Germans in 1940 (Tangerine Dream is, after all, a German band) as a celebration of peace and reconciliation, as well as a lasting showcase for great contemporary art. This film released now for the first time on DVD will be welcomed by the massive Tangerine Dream fan base, and also seen for what it is - a meeting of cultures and for a brief moment in time, a time where the past met both the present and the future.

MINIMUM - MAXIMUM (2DVD) (used)
EMI SHDVD0085 - GERMANY, 2005 |
|
Style: Electronic/Electro || USED DVD || M-/M- || PAL/Region 0 || Digipack || w/slipcase || Recorded live during Kraftwerk's record-breaking world tour of 2004, Minimum-Maximum is essentially the video companion to the live album of the same name, which means that it rises and falls on precisely the same strengths and weaknesses as the album. It is a clich to say that Kraftwerk live are not one of rock's great visual extravaganzas. It's the screens and movies that flicker behind them that you take away in your memory, and Minimum-Maximum knows that. For much of the two discs, Kraftwerk themselves are not even visible; instead, the films take over, and though many of them simply recount the promo videos that were shot when the best of this collection was new (The Model and Trans-Europe Express will be especially familiar to the longtime viewer), it would be a strange curmudgeon indeed who demanded otherwise. Divorced from the live concert experience, Minimum-Maximum does grow a little wearing in places -- for all the technological brilliance of their '80s-and-beyond output, Kraftwerk have never recaptured the sheer atmosphere of their earlier works, and the highlights of the live show are, of course, the numbers we've known for so long now. Neither is the sense of techno-for-techno's sake that haunts the likes of Planet of Visions and Vitamins, alleviated by the accompanying graphics (Kraftwerk's most boring music is accompanied by their most boring films). But still, with the full 20-song, two-hour concert recaptured in excellent sound and vision, Minimum-Maximum is going to appeal to anyone with a fondness for any Kraftwerk album since Autobahn, and the only real complaint is the absence of any bonus material. You buy the concert film and that's all you get. MOOG - A DOCUMENTARY FILM (used)
PLEXIFILM SHDVD0088 - USA, 2005 |
|
Style: Documentary || USED DVD || M-/M- || NTSC/All Regions || Born in 1934, Robert Moog grew up in New York City, where he developed a passion for playing the piano around the same time he started tinkering with electronic equipment, an interest he picked up from his father. In 1949, Moog had learned how to build and play theremins, one of the world's first electronic musical instruments, and he began selling mail-order theremin kits out of his apartment in the early '60s. Moog's obsession with using electronics to create music led him to invent and market the Moog synthesizer in 1964; while hardly the first electronic keyboard, its broad range of strange but inviting sounds (as well as its unique simulations of real instruments) pushed the keyboard-based synthesizer into the forefront of electronic music-making. The award-winning album Switched on Bach by Walter Carlos (later Wendy Carlos) was performed entirely on the Moog, and soon everyone from the Beatles to Buck Owens began exploring the possibilities of the synthesizer. Moog is a documentary that chronicles Robert Moog's life and times, as well as his philosophies about electronics and music, and features testimonials from some of the many musicians who have used his instruments, including Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Money Mark, and DJ Spooky. IN SEARCH OF ANCIENT GODS

This obscure little gem is the only album by UK group Absolute Elsewhere, led by keyboardist / composer Paul Fishmann. The group also included guitarist Philip Saatchi, bassist Jon Astrop and the great Bill Bruford on drums. This is a concept album based on the books by Erich von Daniken, who proposed a theory of earthly intelligence being of alien origin – a concept quite popular at the time. The music is atmospheric and moody, but has all the basic ingredients of Prog, which makes it appropriate both for Prog and Ambient fans. (Jazzis - Rate Your Music)
