ALBUM REVIEW
Gratuitous Flash is the first full release from Abel Ganz (They did cut a demo titled The Cottage Session with three tracks in 1982). Gratuitous Flash was originally released on cassette in 1983, but was re-release on CD by MSI in 1988. The band is led by Hew Montgomery (keyboards) and Hugh Carter (bass guitar), who formed the band in 1980, and between them wrote all the songs on this album. The other members are Alan Reed (vocals), Malky McNiven (Guitar), and Kenny Weir (Drums). The band claims influences from Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd and ELP. Of these, the most obvious is Genesis. The CD is just 6 tracks ("Little By Little", "Kean On The Job", "You And Yours", "The Scorpion" (Instrumental), "Gratuitous Flash", and "The Dead Zone"). Most of the tracks sound like Genesis from the "Duke" period, although "The Dead Zone", a 16+ minute piece, may be closer to the Peter Gabriel years. This is a very enjoyable CD, and I probably would have rated it a bit higher if it hadn't borrowed so much of the Genesis sound.
