ALBUM REVIEW
Breathless continues the move towards more accessible and less progressive music that Camel began on the previous Rain Dances. Unfortunately, the result is easily the band's weakest album up to this point, with little of the excellent atmospherics that made Rain Dances great and even more of the sappiness which nearly sunk that record's lead single "Highways of the Sun". The jazzier, more distinctly Canterburian side of the band is once again emphasized on this album, with bassist/vocalist Richard Sinclair (Caravan, Hatfield and the North) now fully entrenched. Camel even tries out a whimsical Caravan-style track on the Sinclair-penned "Down on the Farm"- a fun tune that nonetheless sounds horribly out of place on a Camel record. When taken as a whole, the rest of the album sounds similarly confused, with the band obviously trying to ensnare mainstream listeners while still offering just enough to placate its longtime fans.
