Many groups have mixed classical music with a contemporary style. In the late 60's early 70's a Dutch group named Ekseption did this under guidance of master keyboardist Rick van der Linden and had some successes in Europe with the '5th', 'Air', 'Sabre Dance' and 'Peace Planet'. Though this music is not for classical purists, it is excellent if you like late 60's rock with a jazzy flavor and some mellotron added to your classical assortment. (J-J.De Greef)
