Time Is The Key is the 2nd LP from the revamped Pierre Moerlen's Gong, released by Arista in 1979 (Downwind also being released earlier that year).It is a return to all instrumental composition,and whilst a little dated,features a well-suited production.The tracks are meticulously edited to blend them seemlessly together.Whilst the line-up doesn't feature the star-studded cast that was on Downwind,there are some excellent performances throughout the recording,with some great interplay between Moerlen & bassist Hansford Rowe in particular.Though the rhythm guitars are at times mired by the production,it's not a major issue,as they take a backseat in the proceedings anyway.This album was conceived by percussive purveyor Moerlen alone whilst holidaying in Ireland,and it was his personal favourite out of all the work he did with Gong.Hopefully a reissue is on the cards,as it's very hard-to-find these days.Pierre Moerlen may rest in peace knowing his legacy is that of one of the true greats of modern music.
