Jimmy Campbell's solo albums always give you the impression that he really didn't want to be bothered to make records. He probably would've been content to just be a songwriter, though his songs would've been difficult for other singers to interpret effectively. This didn't translate into a contempt for his own music-making, but rather made his solo albums seem very tentative in places, as if he was hesitant about giving his songs a public airing. Unfortunately for many, this quality has obscured the fact that Jimmy Campbell was a compelling singer and one of the most evocative songwriters of his generation.
