ALBUM REVIEW
Second effort, four years later his debut, for T alias Thomas Tielen (already well known through the progsters as the Scythe guitar player). If we consider the current depressing musical panorama here’s an album, at last, whose sonic experience worths a listen. Been told quickly, this is a modern and contemporary work, nothing to deal with the past and the glorious 70’s: the sometimes introspective atmospheres otherwise heartbreaking and final are emotionally the mirror of uncertainty and the alienation of our times. The use of the voice too, withdrawn to its usual primary function, marked by a dragged whispering without jumps is a thin presence which really strengthens this feeling. Voices is a 73 minutes long concept album where every sound and arrangement is perfectly blended: the distorted and expanded guitar effects, the pounding bass and the subtle sounds of the keyboards are wisely melted and contribute to the development of the pieces together with the sequences of electronic percussions and the most dissimilar samples enriching, therefore, the sound spectre. There are also inspired moments performed at the cello and piano letting a privileged angle to the more acoustic spirit of the whole work. Highly recommended to all those people which in this last decade have already savoured the most recent albums by Peter Gabriel, or the best Porcupine Tree or, again, the so-called post-rock of the Radiohead…the only exceptions are the third track (Party Piece) that winks an eye to Anekdoten and the instrumental Septic an hommage to the typical Flower Kings’ sound.
