ALBUM REVIEW
Lasting Weep was formed by guitarist, keyboardist and clarinetist Jérôme Langlois and flutist and saxophonist Alain Bergeron (who both subsequently co-founded Maneige), drummer Mathieu Léger (who later played in l’Orchestre Sympathique), and bassist Claude Chapleau, while all four musicians were in their teens. Like many groups in the late 60’s, Lasting Weep’s sound was initially influenced by the blues and psychedelic music, but the classical training of its four young and talented musicians immediately gave the group a progressive style. The band professionally recorded several tracks of unique progressive rock, but being far too advanced for its time, was unable to attract a record label. Lasting Weep’s material contains constantly changing moods with hints of blues and classical music interlaced with energetic flute playing, and while influenced by Jethro Tull, is totally original and in many ways much more progressive than Tull’s was at the time. This eventually led to the lengthy and adventurous compositions that would define Maneige by 1972. Lasting Weep 1969 – 1971 covers nearly 80 minutes of music, both live and in studio, from the band’s initial formation to its dissolution.
