ALBUM REVIEW
Out of Our Hands is frequently singled out as the weakest Flash album, but you'll hear no such admission from me. Progressive rock purists may point to this record's shorter track lengths and (relatively) vocal-centric melodies as evidence of "selling out" for a more radio-friendly sound. I personally find the arrangements here to be the most intricate and varied of the band's career- more melodic but also far more engaging than the comparatively "thin" guitar/bass compositions that defined In the Can. Apparently this shift in style is largely attributable to bassist Ray Bennett, who has taken over as the group's primary songwriter from Peter Banks. Banks' virtuosic guitar is still the primary attraction, but the reintroduction of keyboards (entirely absent on In the Can) and tons of "bouncy" Chris Squire-esque bass playing lend a greater balance to the proceedings...By no means an essential record, but a record that certainly shouldn't be overlooked by admirer of Flash or In the Can. A decent acquisition for any establish prog rock fan. (Walter12 - Rate YourMusic)
