ALBUM REVIEW
SFF, or Schicke, Führs & Fröhling, was one of the German prog greats who recorded on the Brain label. The band consisted of drummer Eduard Schicke, keyboardist Gerhard Führs, and guitarist/bassist Heinz Fröhling (who later joined Novalis after Heino Schünzel left that band in the early '80s). The music is, for the most part, keyboard-dominated symphonic prog heavy on the Mellotron, with nice Moog work, as well as string synths and clavinet. The music is all instrumental, so if you fear another German singer trying to sing in English (like Eloy's Frank Bornemann, Grobschnitt's Wildschwein, or Tomorrow's Gift's Ellen Meyer), you won't have to worry here. Without a doubt, the album's highlight here is the side-length "Pictures". It sounds a whole like like Änglagård ran off with that song and renamed it "Jordröck", as "Jordröck" bears such an uncanny resemblance to "Pictures". Most of the rest of Symphonic Pictures doesn't sounds like a proto-Änglagård, but at times they reminds me of Novalis, but without vocals. So if you're a fan of such late '70s German symph bands as Eloy, Grobschnitt, Novalis, Ramses, and the likes, you're certain to like this album as well. (Proghead72 - Rate Your Music) This expanded CD reissue has been newly re-mastered and also includes a bonus CD of a rare live performance by the band recorded in 1975.
