ALBUM REVIEW
This is an album that Randy California recorded after leave momentarily Spirit, "Kapt.Kopter & the (Fabulous) Twirly Birds", sort of free 1972's homage to his friend Jimi Hendrix who recently passed away. There is contained here a good dose of blues rock and, dare one say moments of early heavy metal; showcasing own and imported material, like some covers: Lennon & McCartney's 'Day tripper' and 'Rain', Paul Simon's 'Mother and child reunion' or James Brown's 'I don't want nobody' among others. Ex-Jimi Hendrix bassist Noel Redding and Spirit's drummer Ed Cassidy are part of the personnel that supported California in this recording; and this album was also toured by Europe (as trio with Cassidy and bassist Larry Knight), but funnily playing under the 'Spirit' name. The opener 'Downer' and the stoned, 9-minute and Hendrix-like version of 'Rain' are my choices to pick here; while the fresh 'Rainbow' and the derelict 'Walkin' the dog' enhance the selection quite well. Entertaining stuff from the great Randy California. (death_metal_doll - Rate Your Music)
