ALBUM REVIEW
Esoteric Recordings announce the first ever UK CD release of a true gem by Greek Progressive rock group Socrates. Formed in 1971, the band was originally known as Socrates Drank the Conium and featured John Spathas on Lead Guitar, Antonis Tourkogiorgis on bass and guitar and George Tradalidis on drums. The band recorded three albums for Polydor in a heavy progressive vein before shortening their name to Socrates. Signing with Vertigo Records, the band travelled to London to record their greatest album, Phos. Legendary Greek musician and composer Vangelis not only produced the record, but also played Keyboards throughout the album and co-wrote the excellent instrumental Every My Dream Comes To An End. As with compatriots Aphrodite’s Child, the band fused Progressive rock with traditional Greek musical influences with great success, particularly on pieces such as Mountains and Starvation. A much sought after release by Progressive rock fans and Vangelis collectors, this edition of PHOS has been newly remastered, fully restores the album artwork and includes a new essay. |
